2013 Dodge Dart: Chrysler and Fiat engines Photo Reviews  ,Two re-engineered Chrysler engines and one new Fiat engine power the 2013 Dodge Dart, pushing torque through a choice of three different transmissions.

The lowest horsepower will come from the 1.4 turbo engine, around 160 hp (possibly less) but with 170 lb-ft of torque. The base 2.0 engine is reportedly rated at 165 horsepower, while the top 2.4, rumored by some sites (not us or allpar) as being at 240 hp, estimated by allpar at 200 hp, now appears to be coming in at 185 or 186 horsepower.

The Chrysler engines: 2.0 and 2.4

The two Chrysler engines are both the “World Gas Engines.” Insiders say that the original block design, from Hyundai, was heavily revised by engineers from Chrysler, Mercedes, and Mitsubishi; Hyundai, Mitsubishi, and Chrysler then set up their own heads, intakes, and other key components.2013 Dodge Dart: Chrysler and Fiat engines Photo Reviews  The original Chrysler version was criticized for its tuning, which was high on peak horsepower and low on torque at key engine speeds. With the new Tiger Shark (or Tigershark) version, Chrysler engineers were let loose without Mercedes looking over their shoulder — but with the option to use Fiat’s MultiAir system instead of the original dual variable valve timing. MultiAir can act on each cylinder individually, and is a step above DVVT (as is the Pentastar V6’s variable cam phasing.)

The 2.4 will be used in the R/T model, and is expected to get a bit over 32 mpg (highway). The Eco model, with 40 mpg, is slated for late arrival.

The “world engines” replaced the “Neon” 2.0 and 2.4 liter four cylinder engines starting in 2006. They boasted advanced technologies including dual variable valve timing and a flow-control valve intake manifold, but, mainly, they were cheaper to build. The engines were designed to be turbocharged and supercharged, partly through use of large water jackets and metal areas around each siamesed cylinder, and an SRT4 turbocharged 2.4 was made.

While all the engines use essentially the same block, displacement is changed by shortening the stroke or using thicker piston liners. The pistons themselves have short skirts and friction-reducing graphite patches. The crankshaft is forged steel, is located above the balance shaft/oil pump, and draws oil from the oil pan; it includes an integrated pump. The blocks are all automatically measured at the factory and key components such as pistons and bearings are matched to individual engines to reduce machining and noise, while increasing engine efficiency.

The 1.4 belts out around 160 hp and 170 lb-ft of torque in the Fiat 500 Abarth; it might be “downtuned” to around 150 hp for this application. Chrysler builds Fiat’s “FIRE” (Fully Integrated Roboticized Engine) in Dundee, Michigan; it has been heavily modified and retuned by Chrysler to better fit American tastes and needs; this included allowing for the use of readily available oil, rather than the European-spec oil used in European editions.2013 Dodge Dart: Chrysler and Fiat engines Photo Reviews

The engine includes MultiAir, a variable valve timing and lift technology which allows for separate timing of each cylinder. The system uses electro-hydraulic valve actuators; a solenoid energized with each rotation of the camshaft regulates the amount of oil sent to the actuator, which controls the amount of lift from completely closed to completely open. The valves can also vary the timing.
